Indonesia’s Immigration Sends Afghans to Pekanbaru Detention House
The Bukittinggi immigration office has sent Afghans to immigration detention houses in Pekanbaru by car.
“The Afghans who had been arrested by Padangpanjang police had been sent to Pekanbaru detention houses,” head of the Bukittingi immigration office Pamuji Rahaja said from Padang on Sunday. He said three had been sent to the detention house, namely Husien Sultani, Hasan Ali and Ehdi.
Earlier the Padangpanjang police arrested seven Afghan suspects during a raid near the twin Silaing bridge below Padangpanjang. But when the police was investigating, four managed to escape.
The sending of three Afghans to the Pekanbaru detention house was under the escort of six Bukittinggi immigration personnel. He said the Afghans had been sent to the Pekanbaru detention house because the Bukittinggi immigration has no special prisons.
“Each arrested foreigner is directly sent to the Pekanbaru detention house.” The Padangpanjang police said the four who got away are now in Padang. “Most probably they took a car and went to Padang,” Pamuji Raharja said.
He said the papers now in the hands of the Padangpanjang police said the Afghans have passports, but no visit visa for Indonesia. He said the Afghans came to Indonesia, and planned to proceed to Australia by sea.
“They were trying to find a better life in Australia.”
He added that Indonesia has often been used by foreigners (illegal immigrants) merely for a transit before going to Australia. “The Australian government in protecting asylum seekers was made use of illegal immigrants from conflicting countries.”
